Snow should continue falling on State College through about 6 p.m. Saturday, the latest AccuWeather.com data show.
The early-season precipitation began overnight and, by 1:15 p.m., had accumulated at least a couple inches in much of the region. At that hour, AccuWeather.com was projecting that 5.2 more inches of snow would fall.
A regional winter storm warning will remain in effect through 10 p.m.
Road conditions in the State College area were easily passable but slippery and slushy in places early Saturday afternoon. Preliminary reports suggested that a few car crashes dotted area roadways, including on interstates 80 and 99.
Closer to State College borough, as Penn State prepared for the football team’s 3:30 p.m. game against Illinois, the university closed all grass parking lots around Beaver Stadium.
As of 1:20 p.m., the game was still set for its scheduled, late-afternoon kick-off.
Meanwhile, local municipalities are reminding residents of winter-weather rules. Most local governments require homeowners to clear their sidewalks of snow and ice within 24 hours after a storm.
Also, Ferguson and Patton township officials have reminded residents not to park on streets there when two inches — or more — of snow have fallen; parallel-parked vehicles can inhibit snow plows, according to township advisories.
Meanwhile, part of Ferguson Township was without electricity Saturday afternoon, according to Allegheny Power. More than 700 Allegheny customers in Pennsylvania Furnace were without electricity as of 1:30 p.m., the company website showed. Centre County-wide, nearly 1,100 Allegheny customers were without power at that hour.
An online database showed the outages were scattered from the State College area north to Bellefonte. Service to all customers should be restored by 3 p.m., according to Allegheny.
Back up at Beaver Stadium, Black Shoe Diaries’ Ben Jones filed this footage, posted below, of early-afternoon conditions as seen from the press box.
