A bicyclist died after crashing into a car Monday afternoon in College Township, according to State College police.

The 70-year-old State College resident was traveling northbound at about noon on a separated bike path on the 3500 block of South Atherton Street. The cyclist suddenly left the bike path, entered the roadway, struck a northbound car and was thrown from the bike, police wrote.

Emergency responders attempted life-saving aid, but the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle, a Centre County resident, was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation, and police have not yet disclosed the names of the bicyclist and driver or other identifying information.

Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be a factor, police wrote in a statement.

State College police, the Centre County crash reconstruction team, Centre LifeLink EMS, Boalsburg Fire Company, the Centre County Coroner’s Office and PennDOT responded to the scene.

Northbound lanes on South Atherton Street in the area of the crash were closed for nearly three hours on Monday for investigation.
