Two men out, two strikes and down one run in the final inning of the game. This is the time when most ballplayers would panic.
Kyler Albert stands at the plate and readies his stance.
“It was a fastball,” Kyler said. “I hit one right between second and third, two runs scored, and we won.”
Kyler, 12, recalls this hit last fall as one of his greatest memories in the State College Little League. And this year, he’s going back for another season.
“I love playing little league,” he said. “If you like baseball you got to try it.”
Kyler has played in the league since he was 6-years-old, and has his father, Greg, as his coach all six years. For the first time, his 5-year-old brother, Cooper, will be joining him in the league.
“I have been helping my brother with hitting and fielding,” Kyler said.
Greg Albert appreciates the opportunity to coach his son and enjoys the memories he has made.
“To be able to take a kid and help make him a better player is great,” said Albert, the league’s player agent. “It is like a teacher seeing their student improve.”
The league is split up into softball and baseball. There is also a Challenger League for those mentally or physically developmentally challenged.
“(The Challenger League) lets you see the children open up with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction,” said Tom Tkach, a coach and father in the league. “I see a positive responses from all the kids.”
The baseball leagues include:
- Tee Ball, kids ages 5 to 6
- Pee Wee, kids ages 7 to 8
- Minor League, kids ages 9 to 11
- Major Leagues, kids ages 10 to 12
Softball includes a Minor League for kids ages 7 to 9 and a Major League for kids ages 10 to 12.
“Pee wee mostly covers the basics of the game, but the older leagues become a little more strategic,” Albert said. “Overall, it is all about the kids.”
Potential coaches can apply when registering their child.
“Come out and try it,” said League President Greg Korn. “It is not as much the score as it is the opportunity to try new things.”
