State College area residents will have a chance Saturday to discard — safely — their expired and unused pharmaceuticals and other medicines.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the borough municipal building, 243 S. Allen St., police will accept expired medicines and unwanted pharmaceuticals. They’ll collect controlled, non-controlled and over-the-counter medications, according to a news release.

The event is part of the National Take-Back Initiative, sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Agency. The idea is to rid medicine cabinets of possibly dangerous items.

‘The program is anonymous, and no efforts will be made by the police to determine the identity of the individuals disposing of the medications,’ the news release reads. ‘Participants will remove pills/capsules from their container and place them directly into the disposal box. Participants will take the original container with them after dropping the pills in the boxes.’

At no point will police handle the medications, and liquid products and plastic containers will be not be accepted, according to the release. Intra-venous solutions, injectibles and syringes will not be accepted, either.

Anyone with questions may call Officer Greg Koehle at (814) 234-7150, police said.
