State College Police received a report of a phone scam in which the victim was told there is a warrant for his arrest and had to provide money to avoid being taken into custody.

The victim described the caller as having an Indian accent and identifying himself using the name of a member of the State College Police Department. The caller said the victim needed to provide the number of a prepaid gift card or he would be arrested.

‘The State College Police Department or any other department will not ask you to send money via a gift card or to wire money if there is a warrant for your arrest,’ the department advised in a statement.

Any local resident who may have provided a gift card number or wired money to someone as a result of this kind of scam should contact State College Police at (814) 234-7110. Anyone who received a call but did not suffer a financial loss as a result should instead submit information about the call to the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov
