Earlier report, posted @ 6:29 p.m. March 22:
The Trader Joe’s expected to open in State College will be a 12,500-square-foot store, company spokeswoman Alison Mochizuki said Tuesday.
She also said the planned grocery store, at 1855 N. Atherton St. in Patton Township, is not expected to carry wine, generally sold in Pennsylvania through state-owned stores. The address is just northwest of Clearview Avenue, between the North Atherton Wal-Mart and Colonnade Boulevard, on the Wal-Mart side of the roadway.
More details about the store will be announced as the opening date gets closer, Mochizuki said. It’s expected to open late in the year, though an exact date has not been announced.
Trader Joe’s, based in California, counts more than 350 store locations, according to the company. It already has seven stores in Pennsylvania, but they’re clustered in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh areas. The company plans to open two new Pennsylvania stores in 2011 — one each in State College and Mount Lebanon, in the Pittsburgh area, Mochizuki said.
The first Trader Joe’s opened in Pasadena, Calif., in 1967, according to the company website.
