For many in State College, this week marks the official start of the holiday season. Our present to you? The StateCollege.com Holiday Guide.

Think of the guide as your road map to the holidays in State College. You’ll find lots of information on shopping, eating, volunteering and merrymaking—essentially everything you’ll need for a fun-filled, meaningful season.

Some of what you’ll find:

Events

From the downtown tree-lighting to Schlow Centre Region Library’s Polar Express, we have you covered with events for the entire family.

Reader Contests

Each week throughout the holiday season we’re featuring a different contest. It’s easy to enter and the prizes are gift certificates to local restaurants.

Shopping

It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving weekend without shopping, so we’ve put together a list of stores running Black Friday specials and extended hours. You’ll get the scoop on big-box stores, the Nittany Mall, local retailers and restaurants. Check here for holiday deals on everything from tattoos to Bibles. And be sure to check back after Black Friday for promotions running throughout the holiday season.

Food

  • Staying local, but don’t feel like cooking? We’ve compiled a list of restaurants featuring Thanksgiving menus. (Stay tuned for additional listings later in the season.) From the Diner’s $.50 annual Thanksgiving menu to the take-home Thanksgiving menu at Harrison’s Wine Grill, it’s all here.

  • Each year local churches open their doors to families who can’t afford a Thanksgiving meal. We have a list of participating churches offering free meals.

  • Local chefs—along with one skilled reader—have submitted their favorite holiday recipes. (We even have a gluten-free one in the mix.) Check back here for more throughout the holidays.

Volunteering

The need for goodwill is stronger than ever. If you’re wondering how to help this holiday season, check here for a list of opportunities. Whether it’s wrapping gifts for Toys for Tots or helping out at the State College Area Food Bank, there are plenty of ways to give back to the community.
