The powerful thunderstorms that rolled Sunday into Centre County dropped between one and two inches of rain on much of the State College area, according to AccuWeather.com.
‘It would not surprise me if someone picked up 2.5, maybe even three inches’ in some spots, said AccuWeather.com senior meteorologist Tom Kines.
He said most of the rain fell between 7 and 8 p.m., when a severe thunderstorm warning for the county expired.
Regions immediately east of the State College area — including Penns Valley — saw much less rainfall as the storms lessened in intensity, Kines said.
But in State College borough and immediately surrounding townships, the rain fell so quickly that it created some localized flooding, observers said. StateCollege.com readers reported some limited flooding on North Atherton Street near Woodycrest, on East College Avenue near Lemont, and on Cricklewood Drive in Toftrees.
They noted a number of flooded basements, as well.
With Sunday’s rainfall, Kines said, the State College area has received nearly 3.5 inches of precipitation so far in August. The average rainfall for the month is just about four inches.
For the summer months of June, July and August (thus far), the area has now logged about 9.5 inches of rain. That’s about on par with the average rainfall for that period of time, Kines said.
AccuWeather.com is forecasting about 0.3 inches of rain for Monday, along with a high temperature of 74 degrees. Sunnier weather is expected to return Tuesday through Thursday.
