Street Closures Scheduled for Utility Work in State College

A number of streets around State College Borough will be closed for utility work this week, while the start of the Calder Way project and the ongoing Atherton Street project will create some additional traffic impacts as well.

From 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, the following street and sidewalk closures will be in place, according to notices sent by the borough:

• South Garner Street between East Calder Way and East College Avenue for R&R Excavation to perform excavation for directional boring to place utility lines.

• Sowers Street between East Calder Way and East College Avenue for R&R Excavation to perform excavation for directional boring to place utility lines.

• Wolf Alley between East Prospect and East Foster avenues for West Penn Power work.

From 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, the corner of Grass Alley and North Buckhout Street also will be closed for West Penn Power power work.

From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, Ameron Construction will be performing excavation for sewer lateral installation and saw cutting, resulting in the entire street and sidewalks being closed at the following locations:

• East Calder Way between High and Keller streets

• D Alley between West Hamilton and West Prospect avenues

• Legion Lane between University Drive and Kemmerer Road

• Highland Alley between H Alley and South Atherton Street

• Center Lane between Westerly Parkway and South Atherton Street

• East Prospect Avenue between Pugh Street and Locust Lane

• Keller Street between East Calder Way and East Beaver Avenue

Starting Monday, the multi-year project to replace aging utility infrastructure and create a more pedestrian-friendly space on Calder Way will begin with exploratory excavation between South Fraser and McAllister streets. The excavation phase is expected to take three weeks and localized traffic and pedestrian disruptions managed by two-person traffic control. Utility replacement is scheduled to begin on Sept. 19 and continue into November.

Work on the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Atherton Street project also continues, and drivers can expect the following this week on South Atherton Street:

Monday through Saturday two crews will continue full-depth roadway reconstruction and prepare to install new curb and gutter between West Beaver and West Fairmount avenues. A third crew will prep and pour new sidewalks in the same area. Flaggers in the roadway will enforce an alternating traffic pattern.

Monday through Friday a crew will place brick pavers in designated sidewalk areas between Clay Lane and Highland Avenue. Flaggers will enforce an alternating traffic pattern.

Monday a crew will pave the sewer line trench at the Westerly Parkway intersection. The traffic signal will be set to flash mode and flaggers will direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

Tuesday through Thursday a crew will place new curb and gutter between West Beaver and West Fairmount avenues. Flaggers will enforce an alternating traffic pattern.

Tuesday a crew will place new sewer line at the West Hamilton Avenue intersection. Flaggers will enforce an alternating traffic pattern.

Wednesday and Thursday a crew will prep to tie the new waterline into the existing water line at the intersection of Logan Avenue, with flaggers enforcing an alternating traffic pattern.

• PennDOT will set the traffic signal at West Beaver Avenue to flash mode as needed and flaggers will enforce an alternating traffic pattern throughout the week.

• The right lane of West Beaver Avenue heading toward downtown remains closed between H and Cresson alleys.

“PennDOT reminds motorists that intermittent traffic stops are possible for short periods during work activities and urges drivers to use caution when traveling through the work zone,” a release from the department stated. “PennDOT also reminds drivers not to follow construction equipment into the closed lane and to use both lanes to the merge point to minimize traffic back-ups and shorten travel delays when approaching the work zone.”
