Mother nature seems to have a Father’s Day gift for State College.

Following a week of humidity with intermittent showers and thunderstorms, Accuweather Senior Meteorologist Paul Walker expects a weekend of sunshine just in time to get out with dad.

“It looks gorgeous again this weekend,” Walker says. “A cold front coming through Friday evening is bringing in some drier air.”

This past week followed a similar pattern of a rainy week and sunny weekend. Also like last week, Saturday is expected to be cooler than Sunday. The forecast calls for a high of 73 on Saturday and 81 on Sunday.

Walker advises that sunburn will be more likely in the low humidity, and recommends bringing sunblock if you plan on enjoying the pleasant weather.

Sunblock may also be advisable for families taking advantage of the Father’s Day special at State College’s Park Forest and Welch swimming pools, where any dad with another paying customer gets free admission.

Centre Region Director of Parks and Recreation Ron Woodhead says the special began three years ago as way to help encourage the area’s pools as a place for families to spend time together.

“Our pools remain a really popular asset for the community as our elected officials have invested seven million dollars in these facilities to make that happen,” Woodhead says. “And that means absolutely nothing for a son and a dad who come to the pools; they just know it’s fun.”
