A new behind-the-scenes documentary chronicling Penn State’s student-run philanthropy, THON, will premier on TV in late September around the state, the university announced Thursday.
‘Why We Dance: The Story of THON,’ a 60-minute TV program introduces viewers to Four Diamonds families battling childhood cancer while following Penn State students as they prep for fundraising events and bond with their adopted THON families.
The show premiers at 8 p.m. Sept. 27 on WPSU-TV.
That same night, the documentary will air across Pennsylvania on the following public television stations:
- WVIA-TV in Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton at 8 p.m.
- WQED-TV in Pittsburgh at 8 p.m.
- WQLN-TV in Erie at 9 p.m.
- WITF-TV in Harrisburg at 9 p.m.
THON raised nearly $10.7 million for the Four Diamonds Fund last year, a new record.
According to Penn State, production of the documentary started in Sept. 2010.
Additional events will also take place in the weeks leading up to the premiere, the school said, including a private screening for THON families and guests on Sept. 14, at the Hershey Theatre, and screenings in select cities co-hosted by the Penn State Alumni Association and public television stations.
