With construction and utility relocation continuing for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s multi-year North Atherton Street improvement project, motorists can expect a change in traffic pattern through part of the work zone and continued lane closures and travel delays.

The entire project will take place through 2019 and will be done in phases between Aaron Drive and Park Avenue. Overall work on the project will include relocation of utility lines, sewer and water lines, drainage improvements, curbing, sidewalks, ADA ramps, traffic signal upgrades, new concrete median and paving.

Drivers are urged to use both lanes to the merge points through the project and not to follow construction vehicles into closed lanes.  Property owners are encouraged to approach workers on the project if they need assistance entering or exiting their properties.

Travel delays may occur because of lane closures, especially during high traffic volume times. Flaggers may be in the roadway directing traffic and traffic may be stopped for short periods of time.

Here’s what drivers can expect this week.

From West Aaron Drive to West North Hills Place:

– The lane closure between Aaron Drive and North Hills Place will remain in place through Wednesday. This allows for two lanes for inbound traffic and two lanes for outbound traffic. However, when the contractor is working, traffic will be reduced to a single lane for inbound traffic and a single lane for outbound traffic to allow for drainage pipe installation across the three center lanes. Left turns are restricted because the turning lane is being used for inbound traffic.

– On Thursday, the traffic pattern will shift between Aaron Drive and North Hills Place. Currently, the far, right lane is closed heading toward University Park. On Thursday, this lane will be opened and the far-left lane will be closed. Two lanes will remain open for inbound traffic and two lanes for outbound traffic, but while the contractor is working, traffic will be reduced to a single lane for outbound traffic. Left turns will be restricted because the turning lane is being used for outbound traffic

From North Hills Place to Cherry Lane:

– Daylight lane closures will be in place and will maintain traffic in at least one lane in each direction. The contractor will be installing new sewer in this ara

From Cherry Lane to Park Avenue

– Daylight lane closures will maintain traffic in at least one lane in each direction as a new waterline is installed and Verizon continues relocation work.

All work is weather- and schedule-dependent. Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. is the contractor for the $12.8 million project.

‘PennDOT has numerous projects taking place in the State College area and is aware of the frustration road work can create,’ a news release stated. ‘Please be patient and courteous while driving, walking or biking. Practicing safe driving habits keeps road workers and road users safe.’
