The Tussey Mountainback footrace returns Saturday, Oct. 25 and Sunday, Oct. 26, with its signature blend of scenic endurance events and community impact. This year proceeds from the long-standing ultramarathon will benefit the Jana Marie Foundation, the Centre County nonprofit focused on youth mental health and suicide prevention.
Known for its winding routes through Rothrock State Forest, the Tussey Mountainback isn’t just about clocking miles. Since its founding in 2000, the race has made it a point to give back to local causes. Each year, race organizers select a nonprofit beneficiary to receive proceeds from the weekend’s events.
The race lineup is stacked with options: 50- and 100-mile solo ultramarathons, a 50K, a 50-mile team relay, a half-marathon and a 1-mile kids’ run.
Whether you’re a seasoned ultra runner or just lacing up for a good cause, there’s something for every fitness level.
The Jana Marie Foundation, based in State College, works to increase awareness around mental health issues and create safe spaces for young people to talk, grow and heal. With rising concern about youth suicide rates and emotional well-being, the foundation offers free or low-cost programs, often reaching people before a crisis point.
Over the years, the Mountainback has become more than just a race. It’s a tradition built on sweat, scenery and service. Started by two local runners, the event celebrates not only the challenge of long-distance running but also the natural beauty of Central Pennsylvania and the strength of the community that rallies behind it.
Major sponsors for this year’s event include the Happy Valley Adventure Bureau, Geisinger Health, Rapid Transit Sports, Wegmans, Appalachian Outdoors/The North Face, The Bicycle Shop, East Coast Health & Fitness, Tussey Mountain and The Sign Stop.
