State College-area residents can take their unused, unwanted and expired prescription drugs to a special collection event Saturday, borough police announced.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the State College Municipal Building, 243 S. Allen St. In conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration, the borough police will collect the discarded drugs and make sure they’re disposed of safely, they said.
A news release notes that the service ‘is completely free and anonymous.’
It builds on similar events held nationwide last September. At those gatherings, Americans together turned in 121 tons of prescription drugs at nearly 4,100 sites operated by the DEA and state and local law-enforcement partners, according to the news release. ‘Offering this service last year was so successful that the drugs-disposal opportunity is repeated this year.’
Authorities have warned that unused medicines are susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. And simply flushing them down the toilet can pose both safety and health hazards, they have said.
