A wet and chilly summer weekend is here for State College, and a relentless onslaught of rain will hit the town Saturday.
A high temperature of 62 degrees — and a low of 57 — is unusual enough for late June, but couple that with a forecast for 11 hours of rain and you’re in for some rare summer weather.
“Tomorrow is definitely going to be an ugly day weather-wise,” says AccuWeather Meteorologist John Gresiak. “We’re looking at steady rain all day long, and some of it will be quite heavy.”
The National Weather Service has posted a Flood Watch for State College and a large chunk of Central Pennsylvania. The watch takes effect at 2 a.m. Saturday and will last until late Saturday night.
Gresiak says to expect between one and three inches of rain on Saturday, with the potential for flooding in low-lying areas and near streams, creeks, and natural basins.
“It’s going to rain pretty much all day,” he says. “The heaviest rain will be the morning to midday hours, but it looks like it will continue through the afternoon. It’s a rare day for this time of year. It will be very chilly. Just above 60 might be as warm as it gets.”
Sunday won’t be a nice day by typical summer standards, but compared to Saturday it will be an upward trend in the weekend forecast.
“Sunday is a little bit of an improvement,” Gresiak says. “It won’t be viewed as a real nice day but it looks like we’ll get a break in the rain Saturday night, and first thing Sunday morning it may not be raining, but another batch of showers will come through in the afternoon. It won’t be as steady or heavy as Saturday, but it’ll still be coming through all day.”
It will only be slightly warmer on Sunday, with a projected high of 63 degrees and a low of 55. As the weekend comes to an end and Monday rolls around, State College will begin returning to normalcy, warming up a bit with a minimal chance of rain.
