The 200 and 300 blocks of West Fairmount Avenue, closed since July 12, should reopen and return to normal by the middle of next week, State College borough Engineer Amy Story reported Wednesday.

The borough shut down the street for a work project. A contractor has been replacing utility equipment and reconstructing the roadway.

Originally, it was expected to reopen by late August, according to an item on the borough website.

In an e-mail message, Story noted that the ‘contractor tried really hard to complete all work before (Penn State) students returned in August, but hitting rock when working on the utilities slowed them down.’

She said that and some rain affected the project schedule — including some paving work.

The paving work was set to begin Wednesday and should be finished by next week, Story indicated.
