Between graduation, the NFL draft and the significant rise in transfer portal usage, continuity is a rare commodity in modern college football. Each offseason, rosters shuffle and coaching staffs scramble to integrate new faces. Yet, for Penn State, stability may be its greatest strength heading into the 2025 season.
Penn State boasts just that. According to TruMedia, the Nittany Lions return nine offensive players with six or more starts, tied for most in the country with Illinois and Iowa State.
That number includes quarterback Drew Allar, running back Nick Singleton, tight end Khalil Dinkins, wide receiver Liam Clifford and offensive linemen Drew Shelton, Vega Ioane, Nick Dawkins, Anthony Donkoh and Nolan Rucci. It doesn’t account for Kaytron Allen, who many would consider a starter.
“We have a lot of weapons on offense,” Singleton said Wednesday. “So it looks really good. You know, they can’t stop all of us.”
Players like Allar, Singleton and Allen, each entering their third season with significant starting experience, have built a rapport that makes execution feel second nature. This level of cohesion allows the offense to function more efficiently, especially in high-pressure situations where timing and trust can be the difference between a touchdown and a turnover.
That trust is especially crucial in the trenches, where the offensive line bears the responsibility of protecting Allar and paving the way for Singleton and Allen. Five offensive linemen with starting experience return, bringing both physical presence and mental cohesion to the line of scrimmage.
“It makes a huge difference, especially up front, because there’s a lot of communication that goes up front,” Allar said. “It’s hard for me to describe even how much communication really goes on. And all five guys that that are out there at one time are always on a string.”
That kind of synchronization can’t be taught overnight. It’s forged through years of reps, film study and shared experiences, and it allows Allar to stay focused on his reads and progressions rather than worry about breakdowns in protection.
However, that continuity doesn’t exist in the passing game. That’s an area where Allar and his receivers have worked tirelessly this offseason to build chemistry ahead of Saturday’s season opener.
Transfers Devonte Ross and Kyron Hudson arrived in the winter, while Trebor Pena joined over the summer. Their varying arrival times presented a challenge, but also an opportunity for growth and development in the offseason. Allar has spent countless hours building relationships with each receiver, not just on the field, but in the film room and meeting spaces as well.
“We’ve kind of been building into that game mode mindset,” he said. “We’re always talking to each other. They’re always asking me questions on routes, what I’m seeing and how they want me to run routes and be with them as well, like, what are they thinking on certain routes if they get a certain coverage, so I can anticipate it and throw them to a spot.”
Though Tyler Warren is out of the picture, Dinkins has been on campus since Allar arrived and provides a steady presence both in the blocking and receiving game. Dinkins is expected to start this season, and Allar has a high level of confidence in the redshirt senior, who he said has been making plays more consistently throughout fall camp.
“I think we’ve done a great job of that,” Allar said. “Really collectively between the tight ends and receivers, it’s a really good group, and I’m really excited to be playing with them.”
