NFL teams cut down their rosters on Tuesday to fit the 53-man limit, and a handful of former Penn State players have found themselves on the open market. Sean Clifford, the Nittany Lions’ longtime starting quarterback, is reportedly one of them, having been released by the Green Bay Packers, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Clifford served as Green Bay’s backup quarterback to Jordan Love last season, his first in the NFL after a six-year collegiate career at Penn State. His release comes a day after the Packers traded with the Tennessee Titans for signal caller Malik Willis and on the tail end of an offseason that Clifford spent competing for the backup job with rookie Michael Pratt.
Pratt was also reportedly waived on Tuesday.
Clifford, who was a fifth-round draft selection by the Packers in 2023, appeared in just two games as a rookie last season, and completed just one pass for 37 yards. He threw for 207 yards, one touchdown and one interception this preseason, prior to his release.
Clifford, a four-year starter and four-time captain at Penn State, finished his tenure with the Nittany Lions as the program’s all-time leader in wins as a starting quarterback, completion percentage, completions, passing yards, total yards, passing touchdowns and pass attempts.
He was instrumental in the team’s Rose Bowl victory over Utah to cap the 2022 season, his final as a Penn State player.
Other former Penn State players who have been waived/released this week include Jonathan Sutherland and Allen Robinson II (Giants), Mitchell Tinsley and Tariq Castro-Fields (Commanders), Adrian Amos (Jaguars) and KJ Hamler (Bills).
