Former Penn State wide receiver Julian Fleming was seriously injured in an ATV crash that killed one person Friday night in northeastern Pennsylvania.
Alyssa D. Boyd, 23, of Bloomsburg, died after sustaining extensive injuries in the accident, state police at Towanda wrote in a crash report.
Fleming, 24, was driving the ATV at 8:13 p.m. on Painter Lick Lane in Columbia Township, Bradford County, when he collided with a deer that jumped into the roadway, according to police. Boyd, who was in the passenger seat, was pronounced dead at the scene, and Fleming was transported to Guthrie Troy Community Hospital with serious injuries.
Neither was wearing safety equipment, and the crash is under investigation, police wrote.
Fleming played this past season with the Nittany Lions after four years at Ohio State. He signed a free agent deal with the Green Bay Packers after going unselected in April’s NFL draft, but a failed physical held Fleming back from participating in the team’s rookie minicamp in May.
Once regarded as a top recruit nationally and the No. 1 prospect in Pennsylvania, Fleming concluded an injury riddled college career with 1,139 receiving yards and eight touchdowns across 54 games.
Fleming ran a 4.68 40-yard dash at his Penn State Pro Day on March 28.
“I’ve never cheated my process, ever. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in my career, and I’ve always come out on top of every hurdle that I’ve run into,” Fleming said then, within the Nittany Lions’ practice facility. “Whether it be injuries, bad games, this, that, and the third, but I’ve never changed my process.”
