Penn State did secure a victory on Saturday after all.

Hours after the men’s hockey team fell to Michigan State in overtime at Beaver Stadium, the football team landed a commitment from defensive back Deonte Flemings Jr., who was in attendance while on a visit to campus for the weekend.

Flemings becomes the first class of 2028 recruit to commit to head coach Matt Campbell, who performed the ceremonial puck drop earlier in the day, getting the Nittany Lions on the board early — just six other teams have 2028 commitments.

Listed at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds with two seasons of high school football remaining, Flemings is currently unranked by any major recruiting services, which will likely change soon. He attends McDowell High School in Erie, the same school as current Penn State offensive lineman Cooper Cousins and defensive end Aidan Probst.

Despite being early in the process, Flemings has drawn interest from other local powers, holding offers from Notre Dame, Pitt, West Virginia and Syracuse, among others.
