Penn State’s roster turnover has begun.
Cornerback Elliot Washington II plans to enter the transfer portal when it opens in January, he announced on social media on Thursday morning. He becomes the second Nittany Lion to declare intent to portal, with tight end Joey Schlaffer doing so days after James Franklin was fired. Many more will likely follow in the coming weeks.
Washington played a rotational role this season, totaling 18 tackles and one interception. In 2024, he had 26 tackles and an interception. It’s unclear what factors went into the decision, though coaching turnover and playing time are two likely motivators.
Though players have participated in bowl games after announcing plans to transfer, it’s a rare occurrence and likely means Washington won’t participate in the Pinstripe Bowl against Clemson on Dec. 27. That would open the door for playing time for Kenny Woseley, Daryus Dixson and Jahmir Joseph.
It would also mark another blow to defensive depth, with defensive tackle Zane Durant and safety Zakee Wheatley opting out to prepare for the NFL draft.
