It’s now been over a week since the spring transfer portal window opened for business, and another Penn State player has entered his name in the mix. Chase Meyer, a place kicker who transferred in from Tulsa last offseason, will return to the portal and enroll with a new school after finishing his degree in the summer, he announced on Thursday.
Meyer joins linebacker Ta’Mere Robinson, offensive lineman JB Nelson, cornerback Jon Mitchell and defensive end Joseph Mupoyi as the fifth scholarship Nittany Lion to enter the portal this spring. He has two years of eligibility remaining.
“Forever grateful to Coach Franklin and the staff for the opportunities I have had here at Penn State. Happy Valley will always be special to me and a second home,” Meyer posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “However, I will be graduating this summer and will be entering the transfer portal as a grad transfer with 2 years.”
The departure of Alex Felkins, who ran out of collegiate eligibility following the 2023 season, opened the door for a new starting place kicker last offseason. Meyer, beside Sander Sahaydak and Ryan Barker, was viewed as a potential option to step into Felkins’ shoes and handle a significant role on special teams.
He ultimately finished third in the race. The job was first won by Sahaydak, who was later benched after connecting on just two of five field-goal attempts over the first four games of the year. Barker replaced Sahaydak, nailing each of his first eight attempts including a game-winner at USC, and is on track to remain Penn State’s starter next fall.
Barker has three seasons of eligibility remaining, so there’s not necessarily an immediate need to replace Meyer. Matthew Parker, a freshman walk-on from Central York, and primary kickoff specialist Gabriel Nwosu are the most likely options to back up Barker this season.
