Penn State quarterback Drew Allar will be out for the remainder of the season after suffering an injury late in the Nittany Lions’ loss to Northwestern on Saturday, coach James Franklin said after the game.

“So Drew will be done for the year,” Franklin said after being signaled that Allar’s family gave the OK to share the info. “I know the reason I turned and looked is I do not release that information until I cleared with the kid and the family. And I had talked to Drew but I had not heard back from the family before I came in here.”

With just over three minutes left in the game, Allar scrambled on a third and 4 from the Penn State 33. After being tackled for a 1-yard gain, he remained down on the field, appearing to grab at his ankle. Medical staff tended to him and he had to be helped off the field, then was visibly emotional as he was carted to the locker room.

Allar was 13-20 for 167 yards and an interception prior to the injury in what turned out to be the Nittany Lions’ third consecutive loss.

The injury brings to an apparent end the Penn State career of the former five-star prospect out of Medina, Ohio. In four years at Penn State he passed for 7,402 yards — fourth in program history — with a 63% completion percentage (No. 1) and 61 touchdowns (No. 3)

Penn State will turn to redshirt freshman quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer to lead the offense as the Nittany Lions look to pick up the pieces of a season that has turned disastrous after starting out with a No. 2 ranking and national championship aspirations.
