Penn State is moving on from one of its top pass catchers. Omari Evans, who started six games at wide receiver for the Nittany Lions this past season, plans to enter the transfer portal, On3’s Hayes Fawcett reported on Tuesday. Evans’ impending departure wouldn’t come as much of a surprise after Penn State added two prominent wide receivers in the transfer portal this cycle.
Evans hauled in 21 catches for 415 receiving yards and five touchdowns. He served as quarterback Drew Allar’s primary deep threat, and led the Nittany Lions with 19.8 yards per reception. Evans will look to join another program and build on the recent success he garnered in 2024.
Penn State’s wide receiver corps will look much different next season, especially with Evans departing. Former USC Trojan Kyron Hudson and Devonte Ross of Troy have both been brought in to help reestablish a position group that has digressed over the past two seasons. As of Tuesday, fellow starters Harrison Wallace III and Liam Clifford remain on roster.
Julian Fleming, who started in four games over his lone season with the Nittany Lions, is out of eligibility. That means Tyseer Denmark, fresh off his true freshman season, and Anthony Ivey are the only two wide receivers on roster — other than Wallace and Clifford — who recorded catches in 2024.
Evans is set to join Tyler Johnson as Penn State’s second scholarship wide receiver to enter the portal this cycle.
A former high school quarterback, Evans impressed coaches with his speed when he joined the program as a true freshman in 2022. He appeared in all 13 games, burning his redshirt that season. But it wasn’t until this year, his third season, that Evans eclipsed 100 receiving yards.
Evans now enters the transfer portal with one year of eligibility remaining.
