Penn State men’s basketball added its first – and potentially only – recruit to its incoming 2023 class under new head coach Mike Rhoades on Wednesday afternoon following the commitment of Icelandic point guard Bragi Gudmundsson.

According to EuroBasket, Gudmundsson is a 6’5″ point guard who currently plays for Grindavik in the Iceland-Subway League.

In the 2022-23 season for Grindavik, Gudmundsson averaged 10 points, 1.8 assists, and four rebounds per game through 24.6 minutes per game. The point guard averaged a 28.4% clip from three-point land in his 25 appearances this past season.

So close to the summer enrollment period very few 2023 soon-to-be-freshmen prospects remain as Rhoades looks to build a roster following the departure of nearly all of Penn State’s 2022-23 roster at the conclusion of the season. The roster turnover was a combination of factors including eligibility, the departure of then head coach Micah Shrewsberry, and general transfer portal losses. Previously Penn State’s 2023 class consisted of three players including Braeden Shrewsberry, Logan Imes, and Carey Booth. All three joined Shrewsberry at Notre Dame.

Gudmundsson will join incoming transfer players Ace Baldwin Jr., Nick Kern Jr., Zach Hicks, Puff Johnson, Qudus Wahab, Leo O’Boyle, and RayQuawndis Mitchell. Of Penn State’s 2022-23 roster the returning players are Jameel Brown, Kanye Clary, and Demetrius Lilley. The Nittany Lions have room for two more scholarship players.
