A parking deck on Penn State’s University Park campus was evacuated and closed on Wednesday due to a sinkhole.
The Eisenhower Parking Deck and Eisenhower Road were closed just before noon “out of an abundance of caution” after a sinkhole was reported near the front of the deck, Penn State spokesperson Wyatt DuBois said. The area remained closed as of Wednesday night.
“Engineering teams from Office of the Physical Plant are on site to evaluate the structure and determine next steps,” DuBois said.
University police, Alpha Fire Company and Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. were also on the scene.
Eisenhower Deck permit holders were asked to begin meeting at 2:30 p.m. at the lawn south of the Millennium Science Complex and would be guided in small groups by university police and transportation services to remove their vehicles. Some vehicles may not be able to be moved due to safety concerns and transportation services will provide rides home Wednesday and to campus on Thursday for those who need one, according tot he university
Eisenhower Deck is used for faculty and staff parking and was not being used for student move-in, which was already underway on Wednesday.
Eisenhower Road was closed at Shortlidge and Bigler roads.
