The State College Spikes game against the Trenton Thunder scheduled for Wednesday night at Medlar Field has been canceled “out of an abundance of caution regarding air quality in the area,” according to the team.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) on Wednesday declared a Code Red Air Quality Action Day throughout the commonwealth for fine particulate matter as smoky air from Canadian wildfires moved throughout the northeastern United States. AirNow.gov had the State College area’s air quality at “unhealthy” on Wednesday afternoon.
“This decision was reached with the best interests of players, staff and fans in mind in light of the possibility that the Air Quality Index (AQI) may worsen this evening,” a statement from the Spikes said.
Fans holding tickets for Wednesday night’s game can exchange them for tickets of equal or lesser value to any other 2023 Spikes home game, based on availability. Exchanges can be made at the Spikes Ticket Office at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park during normal business hours (9 a.m. to the end of the game on Monday through Friday game days; 10 a.m. to the end of the game on Saturday and Sunday game daysl and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday on non-game days).
Call the ticket office at 814-272-1711 for more information on ticket redemptions.
AirNow.gov, a partnership of federal agencies that monitors the AQI, forecasts the air quality for Thursday in State College to improve to “unhealthy for sensitive groups.”
All individuals are encouraged to limit their time outdoors and choose less strenuous activities when outside, according to the DEP. Pets and other animals should be kept indoors.
People with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teens should avoid strenuous outdoor activities, keep outdoor activities short and consider moving physical activities indoors or rescheduling them.
