John Cleland, the judge presiding over the case, decided to push the start of the trial back three weeks from its original mid-May commencement date in light of a series of motions filed by Sandusky last week in an effort to have the charges against him dropped by the Pennsylvania attorney general. The motion filed by Sandusky’s lawyer asks that the prosecution provide more concrete details regarding the defendant’s alleged crimes, including dates.
However, an April 5 hearing regarding pretrial issues will proceed as planned.
The 68-year-old retired defensive coordinator remains confined to his home in State College while he awaits trial on 52 counts of child sexual abuse involving 15 victims, most of whom he met through his Second Mile Foundation, over a 10-year period. The surfacing of Sandusky’s scandal at Penn State precipitated the firing of legendary Nittany Lions head coach Joe Paterno, who spent 46 years on the sidelines in Happy Valley before passing away on Jan. 22.
Sandusky spent three decades on Paterno’s staff, during which time the Nittany Lions won two national titles.
