Penn State men’s ice hockey team announced the hiring of Matt Morrow as volunteer assistant coach for the 2021-22 season this week. Morrow replaces Andrew Magera in the same role. Magera is set become the Director of Scouting and an Assistant coach for the Fargo Force

Morrow, who earned his master’s degree from Penn State in 2013, returns to State College with over 10 years of coaching experience including two years with the Penn State Ice Lions of the American Collegiate Hockey Association where he served as head coach for the 2012-13 season.

“I’m grateful and humbled for the opportunity to work alongside and learn from Guy Gadowsky [and the rest of the staff.” Morrow said in a press release. “The culture of this hockey program is second to none and I am thrilled to return to Penn State.”

Most recently, Morrow was the program director and head coach at the RISE Centre, Inc. and TRC Academy Hockey in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. Prior to his time in Canada, he spent five seasons as the head coach of the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs of the USPHL Premier League. Within the Monarchs organization he also served as the director of scouting and assistant coach for the National Collegiate Development Conference squad.

“Matt is a passionate hockey guy with a lot of experience and a love for Penn State,” Gadowsky added. “He will be a great fit with our hockey program.”

The news is the most recent change for a Penn State men’s hockey program that has had a fair amount of turnover this offseason. Previously Penn State has announced or confirmed the departure of longtime assistant coach Matt Lindsay [left for similar role at UMass] head athletic trainer Justin Rodgers [who left the program for the NHL] and strength and conditioning coach Cam Davidson who will fill a larger role at Colorado College.

Gadowsky announced the hiring of full-time assistant coach Juliano Pagliero earlier this summer. Morrow will fill a similar role as a full-time assistant on staff but is not permitted to recruit among other regulations.
