Bald Eagle Area wins Ultimate Warrior Tournament

BALLPORT — Bald Eagle Area wrestlers participated in the Ultimate Warrior Tournament on Jan. 26 and 27, taking home first place with 167.5 points. Mifflin County took second place. 

Gage McClenahan (152), Garrett Rigg (145) and Seth Koleno (138) all stood atop the podium for BEA. Also placing were David Close (195), who reached second place; Cooper Gilham (108), who took home third; Dylan Bisel (182) in seventh; and Garrett Giedroc (113) in eighth.

McClenahan defeated one opponent by fall and two others by major decisions on the way to the top. Rigg took down two of his counterparts by pin fall and Koleno pinned three and tallied a major decision victory during their bouts.

The Eagles wrestling team is now 13-0 on the season as they head into the District 6 AAA duals at Tyrone at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3.

Also on the team’s upcoming schedule is a dual meet at State College on Tuesday, Feb. 6.
 

BELLEFONTE

The Red Raiders took on Central Mountain on Jan. 29, falling 50-15.

Among the winners for Bellefonte included Ethan Richner (152), by a 7-0 decision; Max Mondy (195), by a 3-0 decision; Alex Coppolo (120), with a 5-0 decision; and Cole Stewart (126), who pinned his opponent in just 20 seconds.

Bellefonte will be visited by State College at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, for a dual meet. The Red Raiders then head to Tyrone for the District 6 AAA duals Saturday, Feb. 3.

PENNS VALLEY

The Rams participated in the Fred Bell Memorial Tournament on Jan. 26 and 27. The team placed 11th out of 33 teams.

Baylor Shunk won the 106-pound title for PV, finishing the weekend at 5-0 to put his season record at 20-3.

Other wrestlers who placed for the Rams included Clayton Royer (126), who came in second in his weight class with a 4-1 record. Abraham Allebach (160) and Dillon Covalt (220) both went 4-2 on the weekend to finish in fourth place.

Up next for Penns Valley is a dual meet at Tyrone at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1. Heading into next week, PV will be joined by West Branch for a dual meet Tuesday, Feb. 6, where the teams will be raising money for Pin Cancer.

PHILIPSBURG-OSCEOLA

The Mounties placed sixth in the Ultimate Warrior Tournament recently, tallying 115 points.

Leading the P-O wrestlers was Kyle Taylor (170), who placed third in his weight class. Brandon Anderson (195) and Jordan Smith (285) both came in fourth place, while Chase Chapman (120), Josh Hubler (220) and Hunter Weitosh (126) came in fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.

The Mounties head to Clearfield on Thursday, Feb. 1, for a dual meet at 7p.m.

ST. JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC ACADEMY

St. Joe’s placed third as a team in the Ultimate Warrior Tournament, scoring 134 points. The Wolves sat 14 points above fourth and just 8.5 behind second.

Two St. Joe’s wrestlers, Jacob Powers (132) and Zack Witmer (120),  earned titles. Also placing were Amonn Ohl (108) in second, Malachi Duvall (128) in third and Evan Courts (145) in fifth.

St. Joe’s has two weeks off to prepare for the District 6 AA duals at Altoona Field House on Friday, Feb. 16, and Saturday, Feb. 17.

STATE COLLEGE

The Little Lions took their second win of the season from Harrisburg on Jan. 25 by a score of 42-36.

Seven of the 11 State College wrestlers took home victories, every single one by pin fall. The winners included Benjamin Krick (106), Clayton Leidy (113), Owen Woolcott (120), Ian Barr (160), Lance Urbas (170), Cole Urbas (195) and Jackson Heasley (220).

This will be a long week for State College, as the team heads to Bellefonte on Thursday, Feb. 1, and to Central Dauphin East on Saturday, Feb. 3, before being visited by Bald Eagle Area on Tuesday, Feb. 6, all for a dual meets.
