WINGATE — The Bellefonte Area High School girls’ soccer team rebounded from a fourth-place finish at its own Raider Classic tournament on Sept. 1 by blanking host Bald Eagle Area, 3-0, in both teams’ Mountain League opener on Sept. 4.
Junior Mallorie Smith struck twice, once at the 22:04 mark and then again at 62:57, to lead the Lady Raiders. Those goals were sandwiched around Maddie Morelli’s goal at 32:32 off a Carolyn Seibel assist.
Mia Johnson assisted on Smith’s second goal. The first was unassisted.
Bellefonte goalkeeper Cati Besch stopped seven shots to get the shutout. Rachel Veneziano made two saves for Bald Eagle Area, which was opening its season.
The junior varsity match wound up in a 1-1 draw.
The Lady Raiders came out on the short end of a 2-1 decision to Hollidaysburg in the consolation match at the Raider Classic.
Smith scored unassisted to tie the match at the 17:01 mark. However, Alyssa Bell found the net at 20:26 with what proved to be the deciding goal. Hollidaysburg’s Rita Kendzidra opened the scoring just 1:34 into the contest.
Bellefonte outshot the Lady Tigers, 17-12.
Juniata was a 2-0 winner over the Lady Raiders in the opening match, getting goals from Megan Brubaker and Hailey Kepner. Selinsgrove won the tournament, posting a 3-0 victory over Juniata in the championship match.
Cati Besch saved 21 of the 24 shots she faced in the tournament for Bellefonte, which had 29 shots on goal over the two matches.
Hannah Montminy netted a hat trick as Penns Valley notched a 4-3 win over perennial District 6 power Cental in a Mountain League match in Spring Mills on Tuesday.
Montminy also recorded an assist on Katie Martell’s goal at 74:00 that knotted the match at 3. Montminy scored the game-winner 30 seconds later off a pass from Hannah Denger, her second assist of the match. Montminy’s other goals came at 4:10 and 45:10.
Penns Valley had 21 shots, while Central had 20. The Lady Rams’ Morgan Hurd made five saves.
Averey Black registered two goals and an assist for the visiting Lady Dragons.
Denger got Penns Valley’s season off to a roaring start with an unassisted tally at the 17:30 mark, but Midd-West roared right back with seven unanswered goals to spoil the Lady Rams’ opener, 7-2, on Saturday.
Olivia Krum scored off Martell’s assist in the 77th minute for Penns Valley’s other goal. Adrianna Rich collected two goals and two assists for Midd-West, which also received a pair of goals from Alyssa Keister.
Midd-West peppered Penns Valley goalkeepers Erica Randolph and Morgan Hurd with 25 shots. Randolph and Hurd combined for 10 saves. Penns Valley only managed eight shots on goal.
