PHILIPSBURG — Al Herr, Doug Detwiler, Ron Eiler and Sandi Myers were big victors during the Senior Championship July 22 at Philipsburg Elks Lodge and Country Club.
Herr took home the gross scoring title by three strokes in the 50-59 age group, shooting a 77.
In the 60-69 group, Detwiler took a close victory over nine-time senior champion Doug Goss, with Detwiler’s 77 good enough to win by one stroke.
In the 70-plus age division, Eiler shot a 77 to claim victory.
Myers became a six-time champion in the ladies gross scoring group, shooting an 89.
The club was to host the annual Fish Open Pro Am event July 25. Presented in part by Dux Head Environmental Services, the event features both individual and team tournaments in gross and net scoring formats. During the more than 20 years of the event, more than 500 different people have participated and over $120,000 in prize money has been awarded.
Last year’s tournament was hotly contested, as Nate Frey of Nittany Country Club took home the individual net scoring title by one stroke over Jody Vezza. The gross scoring division came down to just one stroke as well, as Jake Reilly of Hershey Country Club, with a score of 65, outlasted second-place Artie Fink of Sinking Valley Country Club, who shot a 66.
The club’s annual Walter Swoope tournament will take place this weekend, beginning on Saturday, July 28. Adam Timchak is the two-time defending champion of the event, defeating the competition in 2017 by 10 strokes. The 2017 ladies flight victors were Halle Herrington and Cathy Greenland.
