STATE COLLEGE — Hollidaysburg won both doubles matches, and the Lady Tigers upended host State College to win their fourth consecutive District 6 Class 3A girls’ tennis team championship on Oct. 17, 3-0.
There were five matches altogether, but two were not completed because Hollidaysburg had built an insurmountable lead.
In No. 1 doubles, Alycia Auerbach and Samantha Betar defeated State’s Marissa Xu and Keya Ahrestani, 6-1, 6-0. Abigail Goodman and Jenna Sheetz were 6-4, 6-3 victors over the Lady Little Lions’ Claire Zheng and Sruthi Ramesh in the No. 2 doubles match.
Those results, combined with Peyton Ruggery’s 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Catelyn Janac at No. 2 singles were enough to send Hollidaysburg to the district championship and a spot in the PIAA tournament.
In the two uncompleted matches, State College’s Kelly Vanden was leading Hollidaysburg’s Paige Delerme, 6-1, 4-5, in No. 1 singles when the meet was called; that was a rematch of the D6 AAA singles championship won by Delerme. Hollidaysburg’s Paige Jodon had assumed a 6-3, 5-3 advantage over Amelia Dodoo in the No. 3 singles match.
State College finished the dual meet season with a 13-3 record.
The Lady Little Lions’ season still is ongoing, though. Vanden and Janac will represent District 6 in the Class 3A doubles tournament in Hershey on Friday, Nov. 2, and Saturday, Nov. 3.
Vanden and Janac will face the District 1 runner-up — either Harriton’s Sophia Sassoli and Saige Roshkoff or Methacton’s Dina Nouaime and Tina Prince — in their opening round match.
