With the top trophy of the 2018 season up for grabs at Heritage Hills in York on Thursday, Oct. 25, the St. Joseph’s boys’ golf squad prepares for a finale for the rosters’ core five seniors. The team’s top performers experienced states in 2017, finishing in third place, and boast the most tenured squad of the PIAA AA field heading into the championship.

The five on the course for the Wolves on will be Jack Mangene, RJ Marsh, Ryan Peachey, Matt Steyers and Jason Thomas. Mangene and Marsh will be leaned on to carry the load once again after posting Top 10 individual performances at Heritage Hills last season.

While winning the state championship is the ultimate goal, a measure of redemption for last season’s defeat will be an added sweetness on the accolade. Sewickley Academy, last season’s champion, kept the Wolves away from the 2017 title by 12 strokes. Sewickley will be back in the field for the 2018 championships.

The rest of the Wolves’ competition will be Devon Prep, Lancaster Mennonite, North East and Scranton Prep.

STATE COLLEGE

A duo of Little Lions hit the course against some of the best high school golfers in Pennsylvania, coming out with valuable experience during the 2018 PIAA AAA West Region Golf Championships on Oct. 15.

Tyler Nordblom and Kaylee Richards represented State College in competitive fields for both boys’ and girls’ championships. Nordblom finished the day at Tom’s Run Golf Club with an 87 score, while Richards posted a 102.

The boys’ team hit a roadblock in a chance to qualify for the state championships, failing to qualify during the team’s sub-regional Oct. 11. Qualifying teams for the PIAA AAA boys championships are Cathedral Prep, Central Catholic, Dallas, La Salle College, Manheim Township and Unionville.

On the girls’ side, qualifying teams for the championships are Downingtown East, Hazleton Area, Hershey, McDowell, Mount St. Joseph and North Allegheny.
