Bald Eagle Area, Philipsburg-Osceola and St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy will participate in the upcoming Ultimate Warrior Tournament in West Branch on Friday, Jan. 26, and Saturday, Jan. 27.
Here’s a look at how local grappling teams fared recently.
BALD EAGLE AREA
The BEA wrestling team has earned more than 40 points in each of its last five dual meets.
On Jan. 20, they beat Shikellamy, 45-28. All but two of the Eagles’ victories came through pinfall, with the quickest win tallied in only 28 seconds by 106-pounder Zander Ballock. Cooper Gilham (113), Lucas Holderman (138), Gage McClenahan (152), Garrett Rigg (160) and Kurtis Hall (285) also pinned their opponents.
Also for Bald Eagle Area, Garret Giedroc (120) took the win over Shikellamy’s Drew Balestrini by a 6-3 decision and Seth Koleno won by forfeit.
The Eagles’ wrestlers travelled to Penns Valley for a dual meet Wednesday, Jan. 24, after press time.
Up next for BEA is the Ultimate Warrior Tournament at West Branch. The last tournament this team took part in resulted in a second-place finish.
BELLEFONTE
The Red Raiders came away with a win Jan. 23 as they beat Central in comeback fashion, 47-24.
Jadon Lucas (152), Andrew Howe (182) and Max Mondy (195) all pinned their opponents to lead the Bellefonte team. Ethan Richner (160) and Ryan Smith (132) won their bouts by decision while Alex Coppolo (120) won by tech. fall. Ethan Rossman (170), Andrew Davidson (220) and Cole Stewart (126) won by forfeit.
Up next, Bellefonte (7-2) heads to Central Mountain on Monday, Jan. 29, for a dual meet at 7 p.m.
PENNS VALLEY
The Rams wrestling team took on Bald Eagle Area on Jan. 17 after an 11-day break.
The break came after the Juniata Duals where, on Jan. 13, Penns Valley won all three of its meets and was one of only two teams to go undefeated.
At Juniata, the Rams beat Lancaster Catholic, 58-18, followed by wins over Susquehanna Township, 59-21, and Trinity, 45-32.
Against Lancaster Catholic, several Rams won by pinfall led by Baylor Shunk (113) in a minute flat. Also pinning their opponents were Abraham Allebach (160), Garrett Lucas (285) and Justin Darlington (106). Carter Felker shone, winning his bout by an 11-0 major decision.
Next of the schedule for PV is a dual meet with Huntingdon at home Thursday, Jan. 25. On Friday, Jan. 26, and Saturday, Jan. 27, the Rams head to Grove City High School for the Fred Bell Memorial Tournament.
PHILIPSBURG-OSCEOLA
The Mounties defeated Moshannon Valley, 38-23, on the road Jan. 19.
Tristan Beauseigneur, at 152 pounds, pinned Moshannon Valley’s Austin Sly in 1:04 to lead the team. Also earning victories were Ian Klinger (170) with a 11-4 decision, Brandon Anderson (220) by a 5-1 decision, Chase Chapman (126) by a 4-1 decision and Josh Hubler (195) by technical fall.
Nicholas Bryan (106), Gabriel Dunkelberger (120) and Cole Hoover (145) also won for P-O by forfeit.
Philipsburg-Osceola took on Huntingdon at home Wednesday, Jan. 24, after press time.
The Ultimate Warrior Tournament at West Branch is up next for the Mounties. The last tournament P-O participated in in late December resulted in a ninth-place finish.
ST. JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC ACADEMY
The Wolves started their 2018 schedule Jan. 13 at the Juniata Duals, winning four of their five meets to place second.
The schedule for St. Joe’s included a 39-24 win over Juniata, a 50-30 win over Harrisburg, a 48-30 win over Ligonier Valley and a 44-33 win over Selinsgrove, before falling to Saucon Valley, 50-25.
Six wrestlers went undefeated for St. Joe’s, including Keegan Rothrock (152), Amonn Ohl (106), Ethan Kauffman (113), Zack Witmer (120), Caleb Dowling (138) and Lane Aikey (120). Rothrock defeated two ranked opponents over the course of his perfect day.
The Wolves wrestling team will head to West Branch High School for the Ultimate Warrior Tournament. So far this year, the 5-1 St. Joe’s team has already won a tournament — the Panther Holiday Classic — and placed third in Mount Mat Madness.
STATE COLLEGE
The Little Lions wrestling team fell to Chambersburg on Jan. 18 by a score of 50-25.
Lance Urbas (160) and Owen Woolcott (120) won their bouts by major decisions, 13-3 and 11-3, respectively. Also earning a victory for State College was Clayton Leidy (113) by technical fall over Chambersburg’s Will Sharrar. Yousif Alsekhkder (195) and Cole Urbas (220) won by forfeit.
On Jan. 22, the State College wrestlers fell again, this time to Central Mountain, 56-12. Cole Urbas (195) won his bout over Central Mountain’s Tanner Riggle by pinfall in 5:02. Clayton Leidy (113) and Owen Woolcott (120) won their bouts by decision.
The 1-11 Little Lions take on Harrisburg on Thursday, Jan. 25, before travelling to Hollidaysburg on Tuesday, Jan. 30.
