Do you drive along a Pennsylvania road and wonder what type of flower is blooming on the hills and median strip?  Do you hike on Mount Nittany hoping to see a certain type of wildflower only to discover it is not in bloom?

Local author Carol A. Sanderson has written the perfect book for you <96> and for anyone who loves Pennsylvania<92>s flowers. A Guide to Common Pennsylvania Wildflowers (Breezewood Publications, Reedsville, PA) is filled with descriptions and brightly colored photos of the various types of wildflowers that are found throughout the state.

The book is perfect for someone like me, who can barely tell the difference between a lilac and a hyacinth.  The description of each flower begins with the plant<92>s common name and its scientific name, and a general description of the flower that includes where it blooms, when it blooms, and at least one interesting tidbit. Each description is accompanied by at least one photograph.

The book is broken down by blooming periods and lists the plants from the earliest to latest bloomers, making it easy to use this as a guidebook.  (The less searching in a book I have to do, the better.) She includes a glossary for the novice, an index, and locations that feature beautiful selections of wildflowers.

Sanderson brings a high level of expertise to the book.  Her husband, Milton W. Sanderson, is a retired entomologist who has spent many years studying wildflowers, and for the past ten years, Carol Sanderson has been his assistant. She was interested in learning about wildflowers even before she met her husband, and the book she wrote, she explains in her introduction, is the type of book she has searched for and could not find.

My only complaint with the book is that, although it is a softcover book, it might be awkward to carry around on a hike. It<92>s not a book you can tuck in your pocket.

However, for anyone who loves flowers and wants to identify what they see in Pennsylvania, or for anyone who appreciates beautiful photographs of flowers, this is an excellent book.
