The efforts of Penn State’s THON and Four Diamonds to conquer pediatric cancer now have a permanent recognition at Beaver Stadium.
Banner signage installed at Gate B ahead of Saturday’s Homecoming game was made possible as part of an anonymous donor’s $10 million gift to the $700 million stadium renovation project. The donor relinquished naming rights to honor the two organizations, which this year are celebrating 50 years of partnership.
“We are thrilled to be recognized as a permanent fixture at Beaver Stadium,” Suzanne Graney, executive director of Four Diamonds, said in a statement. “We are so grateful to Penn State Athletics for being a Partner in the Fight to conquer childhood cancer. We are likewise thankful to this anonymous donor for their generosity and creativity in helping us to raise awareness about childhood cancer with our Nittany Lion fans.”
The signage identifying Gate B reads “Celebrating Four Diamonds and THON” with the logos of each organization and a QR code linking to the THON website.
Since 1977, THON, the world’s largest student-run philanthropy has raised more than $273 million to help Four Diamonds ensure that more than 5,500 children and their families do not face a financial burden for their pediatric cancer care at Penn State Health Golisano Children’s Hospital.
More than 16,500 student volunteers participate in year-round efforts to provide emotional and financial support and fund research with Four Diamonds. THON culminates each February with the annual 46-hour dance marathon at the Bryce Jordan Center.
“Penn State Athletics and THON represent two of the strongest communities within the Penn State family, bringing people together through shared experience, traditions and a commitment to something bigger than themselves,” Lauren Mellas, THON 2027 executive director, said in a statement. “Both communities have a lasting impact on students, alumni and fans, and there is incredible opportunity when we bring that passion together. We are excited to continue building our partnership with Athletics and to see the impact we can make together, For the Kids.”
