A wintry mix of precipitation is causing closings and delays for Thursday around Centre County.
The National Weather Service at State College issued a winter weather advisory for the county from 10 p.m. Wednesday to noon Thursday. The NWS forecasts up to an inch of snow and sleet and ice accumulations of one-tenth to two-tenths of an inch.
“Plan on slippery road conditions,” according to the advisory. “The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning commute.”
AccuWeather forecasts snow and sleet beginning around 11 p.m. Wednesday in the State College area and accumulating a coating to an inch. Sleet and freezing rain will then continue in the early morning hours before tapering off by 10 a.m.
Here’s a look at the closings, delays, cancellations and other impacts announced so far for Thursday.
SCHOOLS
• Penn State University Park campus classes, activities and non-essential work are canceled until noon. Parking is prohibited at all faculty/staff surface parking lots and parking deck roof levels on campus from midnight to 7 a.m.
• Bald Eagle Area School District schools will be closed and students will have a flexible instruction day.
• Bellefonte Area School District schools will be closed and students will have a flexible instruction day. After-school activities are canceled.
• Penns Valley Area School District schools will be closed and students will have a flexible instruction day. After-school activities will occur as scheduled.
• Philipsburg-Osceola Area School District schools will be closed.
• State College Area School District schools will be closed. After-school activities will occur as scheduled unless otherwise announced.
COURT AND GOVERNMENT OFFICES
• The Centre County Courthouse and court offices will open at noon. This includes the Court of Common Pleas, Court Administration, Probation and Parole Department, Domestic Relations and Magisterial District Courts. Court proceedings affected by the delay may be rescheduled to a later date and/ortime. Involved parties will be notified of the need to reschedule or the date/time of rescheduled matters.
The hearing scheduled in the Subu Vedam case will begin at noon.
• Centre County Government offices will open at 10 a.m.
• Centre County transportation services are canceled for the day.
• The Rockview/Pleasant Gap Driver License Center will be closed.
HEALTH CARE
• Penn State Health State College locations will be closed for the morning session. All in-person visits scheduled for the morning will be converted to telehealth or rescheduled as appropriate. The exception is endoscopy, which will start procedures at 11 a.m. Penn State Health will contact impacted patients.
• The following Mount Nittany Health offices will open to patients at noon:
- All outpatient clinics includingExpressCARE
- Lab services at Mount Nittany Health Clinics (excluding the lab at the Medical Center)
- Sieg Neuroscience Center
- Center for Wound Care, including Diabetes Foot Clinic and Orthotics
- Pain Management Program
- Clinics, Radiology and Lab at 1850 Park Avenue
- Anticoagulation clinic
- Radiation/Oncology Therapy
- Bellefonte Corporate Services
- Courier Service
- Outpatient Speech Therapy
- Outpatient Nutrition
- Medical Oncology
- Children’s Advocacy Center
- Medical Center outpatient programs: Cardiac/pulmonary rehab
Mount Nittany Medical Center (including the emergency department, endoscopy services and laboratory services), Surgical Center, Breast Care Center, Medical Treatment Unit, and Mount Nittany Health Imaging—Blue Course will be open as regularly scheduled.
HIGHWAY RESTRICTIONS
PennDOT has announced numerous vehicle restrictions on highways, including several impacting Centre County.
Tier 4 restrictions prohibiting commercial vehicles, buses, RVs motorcycles and passenger vehicles towing trailers will be in place beginning at midnight for the entire length of Interstate 99 and for Interstate 80 from exit 4 to 173. Tier 4 restrictions also will go into effect at 4 a.m. on U.S. 22/322 from I-81 to I-99.
