Centre County registered one new COVID-19 death and 12 cases of the virus on Tuesday as infection rates and hospitalizations locally and statewide continue to fall, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
The death is the county’s 345th attributed to COVID-19 since March 2020 and sixth reported this month. The new cases bring the county’s total to 34,862 (30,975 confirmed and 3,887 probable).
Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is 17, down from 23 a week ago and 74 a month ago. The average is the county’s lowest since Aug. 13.
Pennsylvania registered 966 new COVID-19 cases — the third straight day with fewer than 1,000 to bring the statewide total to 2,765,051.
The commonwealth’s seven-day average fell below 1,000 for the first time since July 31. The average of 986 cases per day is down from 1,629 a week ago and 5,129 a month ago.
With 92 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 43,692.
Hospitalizations
Mount Nittany Medical Center has six COVID-19 inpatients, two fewer than on Monday, with one in intensive care and none on ventilators. COVID hospitalizations at the medical center are at their lowest level since late July.
The patients range in age from 31 to 88, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard. Two are fully vaccinated and four are not vaccinated.
Statewide, COVID-19 hospitalizations are at their lowest level since Aug. 13. According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 1,038 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 22 fewer than on Monday, with 167 COVID patients in intensive care [-24] and 103 on ventilators [-11].
Nursing and personal care home cases
DOH has not updated long-term facility data by county since Friday. At last county a total of 20 nursing and personal care homes in Centre County have had a combined 778 resident cases, 754 employee cases and 182 resident deaths.
Prison cases
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has one active COVID-19 case among inmates and two among staff, four fewer than on Monday.
Rockview state prison has no active inmate cases and one among staff.
Both facilities are in Benner Township.
At Benner, 1,446 inmates are fully vaccinated, 10 are partially vaccinated and 196 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 314 are fully vaccinated and 314 are not vaccinated.
Rockview has 1,693 inmates who are fully vaccinated and 63 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 352 are fully vaccinated and 365 are not vaccinated.
Community level
Centre County is at the medium COVID-19 community level, according to the CDC’s update on Thursday.
Introduced on Feb. 25, community levels measure not only new cases, but also new hospitalizations and local hospital capacity. At the medium and low levels, there is no recommendation for indoor masking except for those with increased risk of severe illness.
Eight of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties remain at the high community level this week, at which indoor masking is recommended: Huntingdon, Juniata, Mifflin, Montour, Northumberland, Schuylkill, Snyder and Union counties.
County levels are expected to next be updated on Thursday.
Vaccinations
As of Tuesday morning, 94,360 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 14 since Monday, and 14,107 are partially covered [+9]. Booster doses have been administered to 49,082 county residents [+34].
Among the county’s entire population, 69.5% have received at least one dose, 59.1% are fully vaccinated and 50.8% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 74.8% have received at least one dose, 63.3% are fully vaccinated and 53.4% have received a booster.
Statewide, 76.7% of adults and 67.2% of the total population are fully vaccinated.
Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in Medicine, Mount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.
All individuals age 12 and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
