Centre County Adds 17 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports More Than 1,000 Positives for First Time in 3 Weeks

Centre County recorded 17 new COVID-19 cases for the second consecutive day, while statewide Pennsylvania added more than 1,000 new positives for the first time in three weeks on Thursday.

The county’s new cases bring the total to 35,155 (31,216 confirmed and 3,939 probable) since March 2020, according to the state Department of Health. Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is 9.7, down from 9.9 a week ago and 17 a month ago.

Pennsylvania registered 1,163 new cases to bring the statewide total to 2,786,509. The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 740, up from 575 a week ago and down from 1,035 a month ago

New cases in Pennsylvania in the past seven days have increased by 23% over the previous week.

Hospitalizations

Two COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Centre County, one more than on Wednesday, according to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard. Neither inpatient is on a ventilator or in intensive care.

Statewide, 427 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, three more than on Wednesday, with 64 in intensive care [-1] and 45 on ventilators [-1].

Deaths

DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents, keeping the total at 347.

With 21 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 44,391.

Community level

Centre County remains at the “low” community level for COVID-19 for the fourth consecutive week, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s latest update on March 31.

Introduced on Feb. 25, community levels measure not only new cases, but also new hospitalizations and local hospital capacity to determine mitigation guidelines. At the low level, there is no recommendation for indoor masking.

Statewide, 64 of 67 counties are at the low level, with Bradford, Sullivan and Susquehanna at the medium level. At the medium level, the CDC recommends masks indoors in public for those at risk of severe illness. At the high level, universal indoor public masking is recommended.

Prison cases

Centre County’s two state prisons — Benner and Rockview — have no COVID-19 cases among inmates, and one each among staff, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.

At Benner, 1,396 inmates are fully vaccinated, 18 are partially vaccinated and 195 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 310 are fully vaccinated [-1] and 319 are not vaccinated [+1].

At Rockview, 1,712 inmates are fully vaccinated, two are partially vaccinated and 81 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 351 are fully vaccinated [+3] and 367 are not vaccinated [-3].

Vaccinations

As of Thursday morning, 94,927 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 34 since Wednesday, and 14,226 are partially covered [+8]. Booster doses have been administered to 50,005 county residents [+40].

Among the county’s entire population, 69.9% have received at least one dose, 59.5% are fully vaccinated and 51.4% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 75.3% have received at least one dose, 63.6% are fully vaccinated and 54% have received a booster.

Statewide, 77.2% of adults and 67.8% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in Medicine, Mount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot. All individuals 50 and older and certain immunocompromised individuals are now eligible for a second booster shot.
