Centre County Adds 2 COVID-19 Deaths, 115 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 8,873 New Positives

Centre County registered two new COVID-19 deaths and 115 more cases of the virus on Saturday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The county now has a total of 275 deaths attributed to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, including 17 reported this month. Saturday marked the fifth consecutive day with at least one COVID-related death among county residents.

With the new positives, the county’s case total stands at 24,416 (21,993 confirmed and 2,423 probable). The county also had 223 new negative test results to bring the total 85,972.

Pennsylvania reported 8,873 new cases to increase the commonwealth’s total to 1,883,028. There were 7,700 new negatives statewide for a total of 6,016,711.

With 195 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 35,378.

Hospitalizations

According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 55 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Centre County, two fewer than on Friday, with with five in intensive care [-2] and four on ventilators [-2]

Pennsylvania has 4,593 COVID-19 inpatients, 17 fewer than on Friday, with 930 in intensive care [-5] and 579 on ventilators [-36], according to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard.

Statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations decreased for the second consecutive day and locally for the fourth consecutive day.

An estimated 90% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, according to a DOH calculation that considers a case as recovered if it has not been reported as a death and it is more than 30 days past the date of the first positive test or onset of symptoms.

Prison cases

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has 15 active COVID-19 cases among inmates [-2] and 30 among staff [+2].

Rockview state prison has five active inmate cases [-2] and 18 among staff.

Both facilities are in Benner Township.

At Benner, 1,528 inmates are fully vaccinated, nine are partially vaccinated and 195 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 293 are fully vaccinated and 335 are not vaccinated.

Rockview has 1,687 inmates who are fully vaccinated and 63 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 340 are fully vaccinated [+2] and 377 are not vaccinated [-2].

Transmission level

All 67 counties in Pennsylvania are at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

As of Saturday morning, 90,155 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 82 since Friday, and 11,458 are partially covered [+119]. Booster doses have been administered to 31,419 county residents [+455].

Among the county’s entire population, 70.9% have received at least one dose and 55% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 77.3% have received at least one dose and 59.5% are fully vaccinated.

Statewide, 70.8% of adults and 60.7% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

All individuals age 16 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
