Centre County recorded 26 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday as Pennsylvania registered more than 2,000 new infections statewide for the fourth consecutive day.
The county’s new positives bring its pandemic total to 35,651 (31,597 confirmed and 4,054 probable). Centre County’s rolling seven-day average for new cases is 24, up from 21 a week ago and 10 a month ago.
Pennsylvania’s 2,453 new cases bring the statewide total to 2,820,219. The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 1,826, up from 1,408 a week ago and 576 a month ago.
Hospitalizations
According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 13 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Centre County, one more than on Friday, with none in intensive care [-1] or on ventilators. It marks the county’s most COVID-19 inpatients since March 2.
Statewide, 628 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 18 more than on Friday, with 72 in intensive care [+5] and 37 on ventilators [+5].
Deaths
DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents for the 20th consecutive day, keeping the total at 348.
With 14 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is 44,677.
Positivity rate
Centre County’s PCR testing positivity rate for the week of April 20-26 was 7.1%, down from 8.1% the previous seven days, according to the early warning monitoring dashboard. The rate was 37th lowest among Pennsylvania’s 67 counties.
The county had 105 new cases for that seven-day period, five fewer than the prior week.
The statewide positivity rate was 8%, up from 7.3% the previous seven days. The commonwealth had 8,487 new positives between April 20-26, 903 more than the prior week.
Community Level
Centre County remains at the “low” community level for COVID-19 for the eighth consecutive week, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s latest update on Thursday.
Community levels measure new cases, new hospitalizations and local hospital capacity to determine mitigation guidelines. At the low level, there is no recommendation for indoor masking.
Statewide, 64 of 67 counties are at the low level. A cluster of three Northern Tier counties — Bradford, Sullivan and Susquehanna — are at the high level. At the medium level, the CDC recommends masks indoors in public for those at risk of severe illness. At the high level, universal indoor public masking is recommended.
Cases among children
For the week of April 20-26, there were 15 new COVID-19 cases in the 0-4 age group and seven among the 5-18 age group in Centre County. About 21% of all cases in Centre County that week were among children 0-18.
Since Aug. 16, there have been 3,425 cases among individuals between the ages of 0 and 18 in Centre County — 727 between the ages of 0-4 and 2,698 between the ages of 5 and 18 — representing about 19% of all cases during that time.
For the 2021-2022 school year, DOH is providing weekly updated case counts for two age groups: 0-4 capturing preschool and daycare age children and 5-18 capturing kindergarten through high school age children. The case counts do not necessarily represent exposure in school or daycare settings and the location of exposure cannot be determined in most cases.
Prison cases
Centre County’s two state prisons — Benner and Rockview — have no COVID-19 cases among inmates or staff, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.
At Benner, 1,428 inmates are fully vaccinated, 27 are partially vaccinated and 217 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 305 are fully vaccinated and 324 are not vaccinated.
At Rockview, 1,682 inmates are fully vaccinated, two are partially vaccinated and 82 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 352 are fully vaccinated [+2] and 366 are not vaccinated [-2].
Vaccinations
DOH did not update vaccination data on Friday or Saturday. As of Thursday, 95,407 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated and 14,214 are partially covered. First booster doses have been administered to 50,610 county residents and 4,467 have received a second booster.
Among the county’s entire population, 70.3% have received at least one dose, 59.8% are fully vaccinated and 51.9% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 75.7% have received at least one dose, 64% are fully vaccinated and 54.5% have received a booster.
Statewide, 77.9% of adults and 68.4% of the total population are fully vaccinated.
Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in Medicine, Mount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.
All individuals age 12 and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot. All individuals 50 and older and certain immunocompromised individuals are now eligible for a second booster shot.
