Pennsylvania added 3,392 positives to increase the statewide total to 1,438,684.

The county also had 38 new negative test results for a total of 79,650. Statewide there were 6,712 negatives to bring the total to 5,472,705.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center reported 41 COVID-positive inpatients on Friday, with seven in intensive care and six on ventilators. The patients ranged in age from 21 to 89. According to the medical center’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard, which is updated on weekdays, 12 were fully vaccinated against the virus and 29 were not vaccinated.

Mount Nittany had a total of 136 COVID-19 inpatients in September, according to a hospital spokesperson, nearly twice as many as the 69 COVID inpatients it had in August and nine times the 15 MNMC treated in September 2020.

The hospital had an average daily census of 35 COVID-19 inpatients last week, up from 34 the previous week.

Statewide, Pennsylvania has 2,761 COVID-19 inpatients, a decrease of 55 since Friday, with 672 in intensive care [-20] and 393 on ventilators [+9]. Hospitalizations are at their highest level since April 23.

For the week of Sept. 24-30, Pennsylvania had 2,751.4 average daily COVID hospitalizations, up from 2,458.9 the prior week, according to the updated Department of Health early warning monitoring dashboard.

An estimated 90% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, according to a DOH calculation that considers a case as recovered if it has not been reported as a death and it is more than 30 days past the date of the first positive test or onset of symptoms.

Positivity rate

Centre County’s PCR testing positivity rate for the week of Sept. 24-30 was 8.0%, down from 9.0% the previous seven days, according to the monitoring dashboard. The rate was 11th lowest among Pennsylvania’s 67 counties.

The county had 319 new cases for that seven-day period, 33 fewer than the prior week.

The statewide positivity rate was 9.1%, up from 8.8% the previous seven days. The commonwealth had 25,555 new positives between Sept. 24-30, 236 fewer than the prior week. It was the second consecutive week that the total number of new cases decreased.

Cases Among Children

For the 2021-2022 school year, DOH is providing weekly updated case counts for two age groups: 0-4 capturing preschool and daycare age children and 5-18 capturing kindergarten through high school age children. The case counts do not necessarily represent exposure in school or daycare settings and the location of exposure cannot be determined in most cases.

For the week of Sept. 22-28, there were 18 new cases among children in the 0-4 age group and 78 in the 5-18 age group in Centre County. About 27% of all cases in Centre County that week were among children 0-18.

Since Aug. 16, there have been 461 cases among individuals between the ages of 0 and 18 in Centre County — 60 between the ages of 0-4 and 401 between the ages of 5 and 18 — representing about 24% of all cases during that time.

Transmission level

All 67 counties in Pennsylvania are at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update on Saturday.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

As of Saturday morning, 83,272 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated [+95 since Friday] and 6,340 are partially covered [+16]. Booster doses have been administered to 2,442 county residents [+341].

Among the county’s entire population, 62.1% have received at least one dose and 53.4% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 69.2% have received at least one dose and 59.5% are fully vaccinated
