Centre County Adds 5 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 692 New Positives

Centre County registered five new COVID-19 cases on Monday, marking its smallest increase in two weeks, according to Pennsylvania Department of Health data.

The new cases bring the county’s total to 35,360 (31,371 confirmed and 3,989 probable) since March 2020. Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is 19.9, up from 16.7 a week ago and 11.6 a month ago.

Pennsylvania recorded fewer than 1,000 new cases for the second consecutive day and its smallest increase in the last week. The new 692 positives bring the statewide total 2,798,299.

The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 1,170, up from 901 a week ago and the highest average since March 3.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center has three COVID-19 inpatients for the third consecutive day. None are in intensive care or on ventilators, according to the hospital’s COVID inpatient dashboard.

Statewide, COVID-19 hospitalizations increased for the second consecutive day. Pennsylvania hospitals have 479 COVID-19 patients, 22 more than on Sunday, with 54 in intensive care [+3] and 27 on ventilators [-4].

Deaths

DOH reported no new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry for the second straight day. Pennsylvania has had 44,488 deaths attributed to the virus since March 2020, including 348 among Centre County residents.

Community Level

Centre County remains at the “low” community level for COVID-19 for the sixth consecutive week, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s latest update on Thursday.

Community levels measure new cases, new hospitalizations and local hospital capacity to determine mitigation guidelines. At the low level, there is no recommendation for indoor masking.

Statewide, 64 of 67 counties are at the low level, with Bradford, Sullivan and Susquehanna at the medium level. At the medium level, the CDC recommends masks indoors in public for those at risk of severe illness. At the high level, universal indoor public masking is recommended.

Prison cases

Centre County’s two state prisons — Benner and Rockview — have no COVID-19 cases among inmates, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. Benner has one among staff and Rockview has none.

At Benner, 1,402 inmates are fully vaccinated, 20 are partially vaccinated and 197 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 310 are fully vaccinated and 319 are not vaccinated.

At Rockview, 1,711 inmates are fully vaccinated, two are partially vaccinated and 86 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 352 are fully vaccinated and 366 are not vaccinated.

Vaccinations

As of Monday morning, 95,181 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of nine since Sunday, and 14,233 are partially covered [+2]. Booster doses have been administered to 50,320 county residents [+9].

Among the county’s entire population, 70.2% have received at least one dose, 59.7% are fully vaccinated and 51.6% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 75.5% have received at least one dose, 63.8% are fully vaccinated and 54.3% have received a booster.

Statewide, 77.6% of adults and 68.1% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in MedicineMount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot. All individuals 50 and older and certain immunocompromised individuals are now eligible for a second booster shot.
