Centre County reported 64 new COVID-19 on Tuesday to bring its total to 15,381, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
Pennsylvania added 6,638 cases — its highest single-day increase since Jan. 29 — for a statewide total of 1,082,062.
The county also had 61 additional negative test results, increasing its total to 66,161. Across Pennsylvania, there were 9,847 new negatives for a total of 4,242,714.
Mount Nittany Medical Center is treating 30 COVID-19 inpatients as of Tuesday morning. The patients range in age from 19 to 90, according to a hospital spokesperson.
The medical center has had 62 COVID-related admissions with an average daily census of 23 so far in April. In March there were a total of 124 COVID admissions and an average daily census of 18.
“We continue to see COVID related hospitalizations increase, and we are very concerned with this trend,” Dr. Upendra Thaker, MNMC chief medical officer, said in a statement. “We also continue to monitor virus activity in the community and within the health system on a daily basis, and – while we hope we do not reach that point – are prepared to make service adjustments as needed to serve our COVID positive inpatients and those needing us for acute and surgical care.”
Thaker urged community members to continue practicing prevention measures including mask wearing, frequent hand washing and avoiding large gatherings.
“These measures have been proven to help stop the spread of COVID-19, and we need the entire community to do its part,” he said. “We cannot do this alone.”
Across Pennsylvania 2,541 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized [an increase of 67 since Monday], including 530 in intensive care [-4] and 260 on ventilators [+10].
DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents, keeping the total at 213 for the 38th consecutive day.
With 66 new deaths reported statewide, Pennsylvania’s total is 25,472.
An estimated 89% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, per a health department calculation.
The county’s positivity rate saw a slight decline last week. For the week of April 2-8, Centre County’s PCR testing positivity rate was 9.6%, down from 10.4% the previous seven days, according to the most recent update to the DOH early warning monitoring dashboard. Pennsylvania’s statewide positivity rate was 9.5%, up from 9.3% the previous week.
As of Tuesday morning, 37,425 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated and 19,966 are partially covered.
Among Pennsylvania’s cases, 916,923 are confirmed and 165,139 are probable. In Centre County, 14,029 are confirmed and 1,352 are probable.
