The Bellefonte softball team scored a combined 39 runs last week in road wins over Huntingdon, 16-0, in five innings on Wednesday, and Penns Valley, 23-6, in six innings on Friday.
Bellefonte began this week with a 3-1 win over Hollidaysburg on Monday at home.
The Lady Red Raiders were beating the Lady Rams, 8-6, going into the sixth before they erupted for 15 runs in the frame.
The Lady Rams, though, shocked Bald Eagle Area, 8-4, on Monday to begin this week. More on that later.
Bellefonte’s Taylor Brown went 3-for-3 with a home run and six RBIs. Carley Clarkson came off the bench to hit a home run, drive in four runs and score two runs. No. 9 hitter Maria Cotter went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Jaylee Lose had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs, while Haylie Rimmey had two hits, including a double and two RBIs. Josselyn Nau struck out five, walked one and gave up eight hits.
Kailen Winkelblech had two hits, including a home run, and five RBIs for the Lady Rams. Avelyn Van Heyst recorded two hits, including a homer, and scored two runs.
Bellefonte pounded out nine extra base hits and 18 hits overall against Huntingdon. Sienna Barnhart went 3-for-3 with one of the team’s eight doubles, scored four runs and knocked in two. Lose had two hits, including a double, and four RBIs. Rimmey doubled and had three RBIs.
Madison Melius, Clarkson and Cotter also had two hits. Clarkson hit a home run and doubled. Clarkson was also the winning pitcher, firing a four-inning one-hitter while striking out seven and walking one.
Against Hollidaysburg, Tori Reichert had a big two-run double in the third inning. Melius had two hits and scored a run. Nau tossed a four-hitter, struck out three and walked none in a 74-pitch effort.
The Lady Red Raiders (9-3) were scheduled to host Tyrone on Tuesday before tangling with rival Bald Eagle Area at O’Leary Field on Wednesday and visiting Clearfield on Thursday.
Penns Valley (3-6), which lost to St. Marys, 4-0, last Monday and to Tyrone, 10-7, on Tuesday, got a big game from Taylor Bumgardner against BEA. The freshman hit a home run, struck out four, walked two and gave up seven hits as her defense played well.
Scottie Dinges also homered for Penns Valley. Ava Stere led BEA with two hits. BEA pitcher Sierra Albright struck out eight, walked two and tossed a six-hitter.
The Lady Rams were scheduled to host Huntingdon on Tuesday and Philipsburg-Osceola on Thursday before traveling to Clearfield on Friday.
STATE COLLEGE
State College, ranked fifth in Class 6A by the Greensburg Tribune Review in its state rankings, went 2-0 last week to improve to 12-1.
The Lady Little Lions won at Mifflin County, 4-2, on Tuesday before hammering Red Land, 10-0, in five innings at home on Thursday.
In its second win over Mifflin County, State College erupted for three runs in the first inning. Freshman leadoff hitter Sydney Wells had two hits, including a double, senior Ava Bierly delivered two hits and senior Zia Bodnar hit a home run.
Bodnar tossed a five-hitter, struck out eight, walked two and gave up one earned run.
The Little Lady Lions erupted for five runs in the sixth against Red Land to win via the 10-run rule.
Senior Mady Burkey went 3-for-4 with three doubles, drove in two and scored three runs. Olivia McTavish had two hits, including a double, and had two RBIs. Wells had two hits, including a double, and Ava Babcock had two RBIs.
Bodnar tossed a four-hitter, struck out four and walked one in earning her sixth shutout.
State College was scheduled to host Chambersburg on Monday, travel to Chambersburg on Tuesday and host Cumberland Valley on Thursday.
BEA GOES 2-1
Before falling to Penns Valley on Monday, Bald Eagle Area went 2-1 last week, beating Huntingdon, 13-1, on Monday and Philipsburg-Osceola, 10-3, on Tuesday before losing to Clearfield, 6-5, in nine innings on Thursday.
Against P-O, the Lady Eagles swatted 14 hits and scored nine runs in the first three innings.
Autumn Tobias went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Kailey Eckert had two hits, including a double, and scored three runs. Katelyn Smitchko had two hits and two RBIs, while Stere also had two hits. Albright got the pitching win, striking out five, walking one and giving up eight hits.
Leadoff hitter Paige Jarrett was the only Lady Mountie with two hits.
BEA battered Huntingdon for 13 runs on 16 hits. Maddie Perry had four of those hits, while Eckert, Stere, Tobias and Smitchko had two hits each. Stere and Smitchko hammered home runs.
Smitchko struck out 11, walked none and gave up three hits.
Clearfield’s Alaina Fedder hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to beat BEA.
Tobias had three hits, including a three-run home run, off Clearfield ace Emma Hipps. Smitchko and Maddie Perry had two hits apiece.
Hipps struck out 18, walked four, gave up 11 hits and had two hits. Albright struck out seven, walked three and gave up nine hits.
BEA (5-5) was scheduled to play at Bellefonte on Wednesday and host Hollidaysburg on Thursday.
On Friday, the Lady Mounties avenged a loss to Tyrone, 3-2, at the Curtis Park Athletic Complex to earn their second win of the season.
P-O, which lost to Tyrone, 12-11, on April 4, got a complete-game six-hitter from freshman pitcher Alivia Bizzarri, who struck out two, walked one and had an RBI.
Mykenna Bryan had two hits, while Karissa Taylor and London Cutler had doubles.
P-O (2-6) was scheduled to host Huntingdon on Monday and travel to Penns Valley on Thursday.
