SPRING MILLS — Bald Eagle Area’s Sierra Albright came out on top in a pitching duel against Penns Valley’s Taylor Bumgardner on Monday, April 14.
Both Centre County aces struck out 15, but Albright fired a one-hitter in a 4-0 shutout of the Lady Rams. Penns Valley’s lone hit was an Elle Dinges bunt single in the fourth inning.
Albright hiked her career strikeout total to 793 and became the Centre County record holder in career strikeouts.
She got offensive support from Sydney Thompson, who went 3-for-3. Raelee Repasky had a run-scoring double. Kailey Eckert and Maelee Yoder had RBI singles. The Lady Eagles had nine hits off Bumgardner.
In a 7-0 win over Somerset on a chilly April 9, Bumgardner had another big game pitching and hitting.
Bumgardner tossed a six-hitter while striking out 12 and walking two on the heels of striking out a program record 19 the week before. She threw 75 of her 115 pitches for strikes. Offensively, she had two hits, including a home run and scored three runs.
Sydnie Dalton had two hits and two RBIs, while Callie Riddle solved Somerset’s pitching with two hits. Dinges added a double.
“Callie Riddle came through big for us last night at the plate with two clutch hits,” Penns Valley coach Terry Bumgardner said. “She’s been getting better each week, and her progress was on display.
“We jumped out quick to a 3-0 lead in the first inning with some great baserunning from Elle Dinges and great energy through the whole lineup. Taylor Bumgardner’s homer in the fifth let us breathe a little as the offense picked back up in the later innings.”
BEA (5-1) was scheduled to play at Williamsport at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 19. The 7-2 Lady Rams were scheduled to visit Philipsburg-Osceola on Wednesday, April 16. The results of that match were not yet available at the time of The Gazette’s publishing deadline.
STATE COLLEGE
State College went 1-1 over last week, taking advantage of a sunny day on Sunday, April 13, to pound Mifflin County, 10-0.
State College was only losing by three runs to Cumberland Valley going into the top of the fourth. But the Lady Eagles scored three in the inning and the Lady Little Lions couldn’t dig out of the hole at home in a 9-4 loss on Wednesday, April 9.
Against Mifflin County, starting pitcher Paige Moriarta and reliever Addison Harpster combined on a one-hitter, with both going three innings.
The Lady Little Lions pounded out 15 hits, including three apiece by Mara Jade McShea and Jessica Hawbaker. Sydney Wells and Kara Rhinehart delivered two hits apiece.
Rhinehart had two doubles, while Harpster, Hawbaker and Wells doubled and McShea tripled. Wells, Hawbaker and Rhinehart knocked in two runs each.
State College was led offensively against Cumberland Valley by McShea and Harpster, who had two hits apiece. Hawbaker hit a home run, while Sarah Mellott added a triple.
Harpster took the pitching loss, giving up eight runs and seven hits in four innings.
The Lady Little Lions (3-2) were scheduled to visit Central Dauphin on Tuesday, April 15 and host games against Mechanicsburg on Wednesday, April 16, and Altoona on Thursday, April 17. The results of those matches were not yet available at the time of The Gazette’s publishing deadline.
BELLEFONTE
Bellefonte’s Jaylee Lose was a winner at the plate in a 15-5 win over Bellwood-Antis in five innings on Monday, April 14, at home.
Lose hit two home runs and drove in seven runs.
Taylor Brown went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored. Alaina Smith, Ragan Manning and Sloan Moore had two hits each, Manning knocked in two runs. Smith doubled and scored three runs.
Smith was the winning pitcher, giving up three hits and four runs while striking out three and walking one in four innings.

PHILIPSBURG-OSCEOLA
Philipsburg-Osceola’s Alivia Bizzarri had a huge offensively and in the pitching circle in a 14-3 romp at Clearfield on Monday, April 14.
Bizzarri went 3-for-4 with two home runs and six RBIs at the plate. As the starting pitcher, she struck out nine, walked one and gave up two runs and four hits.
The Lady Mounties erupted for 16 hits, including four from Maddyx Hampton, who also drove in two and scored three runs from her No. 9 spot in the order. Emily Gustkey, Mia Butler and Addy Jarrett came through with two hits each.
Butler and Jarrett knocked in two runs apiece, while Jarrett doubled. Macie Bush and Gustkey doubled.
