Beat goes on for State College girls tennis

STATE COLLEGE — The beat goes on for the State College Area High School girls tennis team.

The Lady Little Lions won another match convincingly on Friday, Sept. 16, against visiting Lower Dauphin, 5-0, running their record to 11-0.

It was State’s third sweep in as many days, coming on the heels of whitewashes at Palmyra on Wednesday, Sept. 14, and Mechanicsburg on Thursday, Sept. 15.

First singles player Quiana Guo and the second doubles team of Juju Dye and Ephrasinia Shimelas only dropped one game apiece against their Lower Dauphin opponents. Guo bested Maddie Freeman, 6-0, 6-1, while Dye and Shimelas turned back Julie Youngblouth and Mena Patel, 6-1, 6-0.

Kelly Steel and Allison Norloff wrapped up the singles for State College, defeating Megan Mayberry, 6-1, 6-1, and Addie Misiolek, 6-2, 6-0. Abby Chen and Emily Zhang scored the team point for the Lady Little Lions at No. 1 doubles with a 6-0, 6-2 victory against the tandem of Emily O’Donnell and Brenna Tressler.

Steel gave the Lady Little Lions their fifth team point against Mechanicsburg by outlasting Patricia Kandrot, 2-6, 7-6 (7), 10-6 in a marathon second singles match. Guo stopped Ryna Shaha, 6-2, 6-1, and Norloff was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Helena Henderson in the other singles contests.

Chen and Zhang overcame Jackie Wyszyrski and Danielle Martin, 6-1,6-4, while Dye and Shimeles breezed past Ashleigh Nedzel and Paige Tyrell, 6-0, 6-1, in doubles action.

Chen and Zhang turned in the most dominating performance against Palmyra by beating the team of Natalie Isett and Rylee Sherwood, 6-1, 6-0. Dye and Shimelas, meanwhile, were 6-1, 6-3 victors over Ava Cuzzolina and Maddy Byers.

In singles, Guo topped Nitya Patel 6-3, 6-1, Steel prevailed against Marissa Nicholson, 6-3, 6-2, and Norloff downed Elaina Potter, 6-3, 6-0.
