HOWARD — Bellefonte Area High School won the 39th annual Envirothon competition on Thursday, April 25, at Bald Eagle State Park. Hosted by the Centre County Conservation District, the Envirothon is an environmental education competition for local high school students.
Teams from Bald Eagle, Bellefonte, Penns Valley and Saint Joseph’s participated in the Envirothon, where they rotated through five stations — including aquatic ecology, forestry, soils and land use, wildlife and renewable energy for a sustainable future — to test their knowledge on each topic.
Taryn Wagner, Mary Dickman, Logan Rarrick, Alyssa Hopkins and Grady Garrison represented Bellefonte and earned a total of 358 points during the competition. The team was advised by Myken Poorman and Dan Sharp.
The team will compete again at Camp Mt. Luther on Wednesday, May 22, at the Pennsylvania Envirothon. The winner of the statewide competition will advance for a chance at the national title against students from other states and representatives from Canada.
Hosted by the CCCD, the local event was supported by Centre County Commissioners Steven Dershem and Amber Concepcion, state Rep. Paul Takac and state Sen. Cris Dush.
The CCCD is a part of Centre County government.
