Bellefonte captures Mountain League Championship

TYRONE — Alex Crist won two races and the Bellefonte Area boys also won two of the three relays, and the Raiders wrapped up the Mountain League championship by edging Hollidaysburg, 78-72, and host Tyrone, 80-70, in high school track and field on Tuesday, April 18.

The wins made the Raiders 7-0 in the league. They are 9-2 overall.

Crist finished first in the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs. Bellefonte opened the meet by winning the four-by-800 relay and finished it by winning the four-by-400.

Chase Ebeling and Sherman Lowry also were key for the Raiders on the track, placing first in the 3200 and 110 hurdles, respectively. Logan Proctor, meanwhile, turned in the best throw in the shot put to get Bellefonte first-place points in that event.

The Lady Raiders split, beating Tyrone 86-63 but coming up short, 84-66, to Hollidaysburg.

Five Bellefonte girls won events: Gabrielle Deitrich in the discus. Emma Liadis in the 3200, Madison Miller in the shot, Ruthann Smoyer in the 100 hurdles and Victoria Schellenberg in the pole vault.

The Lady Raiders are 7-4 overall and finished 6-1 in the Mountain League.

A pair of gold-medal-winning boys’ relays headed the list of nearly 30 medalists Bellefonte produced at the 25th DeMans Team Sports Brookville Invitational on Saturday, April 15.

Crist and Grady Garrison ran on both the Raiders’ winning four-by-800 and four-by-400 quartets. The duo was joined by Ebeling and Alex Mansfield to turn in a time of 8 minutes, 34.51 seconds in the 3200. Later in the day, Crist, Garrison, Zane Hummel and Ethan Wilson were first to the tape in the 1600 at 3:33.48.

There was no team score kept for the meet, which attracted 21 schools.

Crist had a huge meet. He also took second in the 1600 meters and was fourth in the 800. Ebeling, meanwhile, was two places behind Crist in the mile and placed third — one spot ahead of teammate Caleb Vinnedge — in the 3200 run.

Hummel, meanwhile, was fourth in the triple jump and Wilson seventh in the 400 dash.

A pair of other Raiders collected bronze medals — Matthew Loesch in the javelin and Lowry in the 110 hurdles.

Collin Sharpe was sixth in the 200 meters. Lowry, Sharp, Shayne Snook and Trey Wagner were sixth in the 400-meter relay.

Sara Proctor and Anna Tyson headlined the day for the Bellefonte girls. Proctor was the runner-up in the long jump while medaling in two relays and placing seventh in the 100 dash. Tyson placed third individually in the high jump and added a bronze in the four-by-800 running with Natalie Jolley, Annie Cernuska and Alyssa Hopkins.

The duo medaled together as part of the 1600 relay, where they, Hopkins and Madyson Miller were sixth.

Hopkins, individually was sixth in the 400 and seventh in the 800, one position behind Cernuska.

Schellenberg and Liadis came out of the meet with a pair of individual medals apiece. Schellenberg was third in the pole vault and sixth in the javelin. Liadis was fourth in the 3200 and sixth in the 1600.

Paige Jodon placed eighth in the pole vault. Lauren Benner and Taryn Chaplain combined with Miller and Proctor for eighth in the four-by-100.

Bald Eagle Area

BEDFORD — Both Bald Eagle Area teams placed ninth at the Bedford Giant Eagle Invitational on April 15.

The Eagles totaled 32.75 points. The Lady Eagles scored 27.2. A total of 21 schools competed.

Abby Hoover and Chase Thompson captured silver medals, with Gavin Brooks, Tre Greene and Heather Leskovansky taking home bronze. Hoover got her medal in the javelin, Thompson his in the pole vault, Brooks his in the high jump, Greene his in the shot put and Leskovansky hers in the pole vault.

Khloe Cunningham and Claudia Irvin were fourth in the girls’ 800 and 100 hurdles, respectively.

Rounding out the BEA boys’ place-winners were Kieran Jodon (fifth, shot put), Colton Wagner (sixth, 3200; eighth, 1600), Talon Thompson (seventh, javelin), Kaiden Gates (eighth, high jump) and four-by-800 relay of Owen Dechow, Isaac Dechow, Alec Wagner and Jacob Richardson (seventh).

On the girls’ side, Angelina Grieb and Sybil Thompson each placed eighth in the high jump and 1600, respectively. Thompson also combined with Cunningham, Leskovansky and Sydney Bender to place seventh in the 1600 relay.

State College

STATE COLLEGE — State College was swept by visiting Chambersburg in a Mid-Penn Conference meet on Thursday, April 13.

The Little Lions came out on the short end of an 84-66 score. The Lady Little Lions fell 89-61.

Jesse Myers stood out for the State boys with wins in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. State College also won the 400 relay.

Jackson Bodner in the pole vault, David Brown in the 300 hurdles, Henry Smith in the javelin, Owen Vaira in the 800 and the 3200 relay also produced first-place points for the Little Lions.

On the girls’ side, Sarah Tate finished first in both hurdle races. The Lady Little Lions also won the 400 and 3200 relays.

Sanai Abdullah won the long jump, Alex Antoniono the triple jump and Grace Morningstar the 400 for the State girls.

St. Joseph’s

MCALISTERVILLE — The St. Joseph’s girls gave Juniata a run for its money but fell just short, 73-64, despite winning eight events on the track.

St. Joseph’s Karimar Henriquez and Brynn Wright were double winners. Henriquez was first in the 100 and 200. Wright was first in the 400 and 800.

The WolfPack also took the distance races. Brandi Carmack prevailed in the 1600 and Abby Ridenour in the 3200.

Carmack, Wright and Evelyn Reynolds were on two winning relays apiece, joining Amber Fisher to take the four-by-800 and combining with Sachi Frederick-Ohmoto to best the field in the four-by-400.

The St. Joseph’s boys dropped a 109-23 decision. Colin Simander took first in the 1600 and 3200 for the WolfPack, who also received wins from Tim Ramos in the 200 and the long jump.
